Dessert and fruit pizzas aren’t commonly found on most pizzeria menus. Many feel strongly they should not be called pizzas at all because they are more of a pastry or tart. Others fully embrace the concept, creating large pizzas with half being traditional and the other half loaded with dessert items. At Wiseguy Pizza Pie we are pretty laid back, and anything with the name pizza in it can’t be all that bad, right? The more the merrier!

Deep thoughts

While you contemplate whether it is a pizza or not (same with the tomato being a fruit), you might be curious just where they came from. Were they conceived around the same time as the creation of the great pizza pie in Italy, or is this just something a Food Network Chef baked up in the 90s?

Pizza genealogy

It might surprise you to learn that fruit pizza has been around since the 6th century BC! Persian soldiers would bake flatbreads with cheese and dates on top of their battle shields. Fruit pizzas didn’t show up for the masses in modern times until sometime between the 1940s-1980s. Some even argue that Persia was the true birthplace of traditional pizza as we know it.

Fruity creations

The most common is the universal fruit type which includes a thin crust made with sweet cookie dough. The shape typically stays true to the pizza’s circular shape but can also be found in rectangular pans. Once the crust has been baked and cooled, it is covered with a layer of frosting. Frostings can either be cream cheese, a chocolate spread, or sometimes a strawberry glaze.

Lastly, the fruit topping is applied in bite-sized portions. And just like a traditional pizza,- anything goes! Berries, apples, raisins, bananas. The choices are truly endless when it comes to dessert or fruit pizzas.

Dessert pizzas

While the crusts of some dessert pizzas are very much traditional pizza dough, others are more like cookie dough -including flavors such as chocolate chip, sugar, and snickerdoodle. Some are even like chocolate cookie dough or a brownie. The base or sauce is typically honey, chocolate, caramel, cream cheese, or another type of sweet glaze. Toppings are as varied as your imagination! Nuts, cookie crumbles, candies, shredded coconut…
